We are asked by clients all the time, why their resume is such a big deal. It’s simple. Your resume is your representative. What does that mean? Your resume is the first thing a company will see regarding you. If your resume doesn’t adequately represent your skills, work experience, education, accomplishments, and show what a great fit you will be for them, then why would a company want to interview you.
Ten seconds is exactly how long a hiring manager takes to review the average resume. If you can't capture their interest in those 10 seconds then you don't have a chance.
The true purpose of a resume is to create enough interest in you to make a company take their precious time to sit down and talk with you. Please understand and accept the fact that the average job posting can get anywhere from 75 – 350 responses. Depending on your city it could be less, and even possibly more.
It’s not only human eyes you have to worry about. Most companies are currently using applicant tracking software. This software takes your emailed or faxed resume and stores it in a database. A hiring manager will then put keywords and phrases into the program based on the position they want to fill, and the program will give them resumes. ONLY the resumes that perfectly match those keywords and phrases will be given first. All relevant resumes will come up, but once the hiring manager has created their interview list they will stop going through resumes. If your resume is not at the front of the pack, you will not be contacted.
To succeed in the current, and for that matter any, job market you must be prepared. Your resume should accurately show your history and have all the keywords and phrases to beat the software.
If you don’t think you can do it alone, we can help.
